GATHERED WORSHIP
JOIN US 5:00PM SUNDAYS
IN PERSON
1716 N. Villa Rd. Newberg, OR 97132
We share the building with Joyful Servant Lutheran Church.
PAST TEACHING
If you’d like to view some of our past teachings, please email the office.
SAFETY
Please stay home if you have any symptoms or covid exposure. We strive to be, and are continually learning how to be, a queer-friendly, trauma-informed space where all are loved and welcome.
Wayside Friends Church is a faith community intentionally formed in 2017 as open and affirming, Christ-following and Quaker. We recognize that all persons are equal before God, and called to worship, serve, and grow together. Therefore, we strive to establish an atmosphere and traditions that encourage anyone who wants to encounter God’s love to seek to do so in our midst.
WORSHIP STATIONS
These options are available any time during the gathering for everyone.
COMMUNION WITH PHYSICAL ELEMENTS
This is available at all times at the front left and will be served directly after that Doxology. This is a physical reminder available to all of the death and life of Jesus Christ. Dairy and wheat free bread is used.
THE CROSS
Come to the large wooden cross at the front right of the room to pray, light a candle, and/or leave a prayer card. Candles are available at the cross and by the entrance.
CENTERING TOOLS
Adult centering tools are available by each sound booth while kid’s centering bags are available in the main lobby. Use your close senses to give yourself a foundation and maintain a state of calm organization.
PRAYER + CONNECT CARDS
These are located at the welcome table as well as in the sanctuary by the candle supplies. You can place them in the large wooden box at the welcome table. Prayers are shared with our Monday morning prayer group (anonymous prayers welcome).
Our goal is that all can enter into gathered worship thinking:
“I feel safe.”
“I have what I need to engage with what’s happening.”
“I belong here in this space, with these people.”
“I know what to do and that builds my self worth.”
NEW TO WAYSIDE KIDS?
Prior to checking your child into our nursery and/or Kids’ Connect, please fill out a connect card for your and your child. To best ensure their safety, we will only release them to their listed safe adult(s). Please check your child out once our gathering is over.
CHILDREN
Children are always welcome to stay with their adult(s) throughout our gathering.
KIDS CENTERING BAGS
We invite all children to take a centering bag with them into the sanctuary. These bags will live at the church; however, kids are more than welcome to take home any consumable items (i.e. coloring pages) each week. Each bag contains: a visual worship order, a clipboard, something to color with, and a rotating item.
NURSERY
Children 3 years old and younger are welcome any time during our gathering for nursery care.
KIDS TIME
Every first Sunday, all children in the sanctuary are invited up front for an optional mini-lesson before being dismissed for Kids Connect.
KIDS CONNECT
Preschoolers - 5th graders are dismissed for an optional class time halfway through our gathering. Kids will meet at the bottom of the stairs with a safe adult who will lead them upstairs to the Kids’ Room. Children are invited to join in biblical or social/environmental awareness based teaching, craft time, and more. Please check your child out once our gathering is over.
SAFETY
We care deeply about the safety and well being of our community. Children are always with two or more adults. All staff and volunteers have passed background checks and completed MinistrySafe Safety Training. Learn more in our Wayside Basic Abuse Prevention Policy.
WHAT TO EXPECT
We appreciate that knowing what to expect helps our community to be more relaxed and open to worship. While we make space for flexibility and fun, you can generally expect our 5:00pm Sunday gatherings to follow this rhythm:
ITALIAN SODAS + FELLOWSHIP
Around 4:40pm, people begin to come through the doors. There are free Italian sodas available (sugar free available) and plenty of space in the lobby to meet and greet others. You can also check out our worship stations, find your seat in the sanctuary, or enjoy the music (playlist). Children are welcome to grab a centering bag from the main lobby to use during our time together.
WELCOME + REMINDERS
Someone will flash the lights on and off in the main lobby signaling that our general welcome is about to be shared at 5:00pm. Upcoming Wayside events are shared during this time.
DOXOLOGY
We are invited to sing/listen to this short hymn as a way to open our time of worship together. The traditional melody (old 100th) is sung with updated, inclusive lyrics: “Praise God from whom all blessing flow. Praise God all creatures here below. Praise God whose loving never ends. Creator, Christ, and Spirit Friend. Amen.”
COMMUNITY PRAYER / MINISTRY MOMENT
We are invited into a time of guided prayer and/or a sharing time of what is going on within our local/ global community.
MUSIC
We are invited to sing/ listen to 2-3 songs together. The setlist is typically uploaded to our Spotify and often shared in our weekly newsletter.
KIDS CONNECT
Preschoolers - 5th graders are dismissed for class at this time. On the first Sunday of the month, kids are also first invited to a mini-lesson up front before going to class.
COMMUNITY TEACHING
Our time to listen and learn from someone from within our community.
OPEN WORSHIP
A quiet time of worship that creates a space for us as a community to practice listening and responding to God. For those who feel moved to share, raise your hand or stand. A mic will be passed to you. Our Zoom friends are invited to use the chat. We value being a trauma informed community; please be mindful children are present.
MUSIC
We are invited to sing/ listen to 2-3 more songs together.
COMMUNITY BLESSING
We are invited to say/ listen to this blessing to close our time together, “May God bless you and watch over you. May God beam at you and be tender-hearted with you. May God look you full in the face and give you peace. Amen.” - Numbers 6:24-26, updated translation by Howard Macy.
